Summer in the Psalms

The Psalms are much more than just a random collection of ancient poems on a random variety of topics. Like all of Scripture, they are for our edification, and they bring that edification and encouragement to us in language that resonates easily with us. The Psalms inform our minds, stir our hearts, and give us words to pray when we feel as though we have none. They guide our wills and actions, and expand our understanding of the great God that we serve. John Calvin famously called the book “an anatomy of all parts of the soul.” In saying this, he reminds us that every emotion that we feel is expressed in the beautiful language of this ancient hymn book. The Psalms are the songs of Israel. And as we read, study, sing, and pray these poems, our hearts find expression to speak both our joys and our struggles to God. This summer we will be considering select Psalms from the first book of the Psalms (1-41). We trust that through this sermon series we will grow in our understanding of God and our love for Christ, and that our hearts would be encouraged as we learn from the Psalmist to pray, lament, sing, give thanks, and praise God.
